TCADA Training Requirements
Generally, courses offered by the Texas HIV Connection:
- meet DSHS licensure and funding requirements;
- provide professional continuing education credits;
- include certificates of completion and/or attendance;
- include participant manuals and resources;
- include opportunities for education in a variety of advanced HIV and other infectious diseases, and substance abuse topics; and
- are made available in Spanish (limited to certain courses).
Courses currently available include:
PLEASE NOTE: No partial credit is given for any course. Participants must attend each day and each section for the workshop for full credit.
The sponsor may obtain additional professional CEU's. The Texas HIV Connection will be happy to provide the sponsoring organization with any information they may need to procure other specific credits. Allow thirty minutes for registration on the first day of the workshop.
HIV/AIDS OUTREACH IN THE COMMUNITY
Course Description
This two-day course is designed for persons conducting street outreach to communities at risk for HIV/AIDS and in particular the injecting drug user. The course covers the challenges the community outreach worker faces and how to plan for community-based education. This includes but is not limited to conduct on the street, listening skills, and personal communication styles. Also included is developing a community map for targeting the population.
CEU Credit
A total of 14 hours are provided: 7 Alcohol & Drug -Related, HIV/AIDS and 7 Alcohol & Drug -Specific, HIV/AIDS credits will be provided for participants who complete the entire two-day training. However, no partial credit will be given for incomplete courses. Certificates of Completion will be awarded to participants at the end of the training. Continuing Education Units are provided for Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselors, Licensed Professional Counselors and Social Workers. Sponsors may apply for other types of credits.

HIV DISEASE AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE:
THE CONNECTION
Course Description
This one-day or half-day course reviews basic HIV/AIDS information, its relationship to substance abuse and special issues for substance abusers at risk for or who have HIV disease. Topics of discussion include defining HIV/AIDS, HIV antibody testing issues, risk reduction techniques, medical treatments and workplace precautions. Substance abuse and relapse issues will be discussed in the context of treatment planning and case management for the client. A brief review of TAAP ethics and the laws pertaining to substance abuse and HIV/AIDS will also be covered.
CEU Credit
For the one-day course, a total of 6 hours are provided: 3 Alcohol & Drug -Related, HIV/AIDS and 3 Alcohol & Drug -Specific, HIV/AIDS credits will be provided and for the half-day course, a total of 3 hours are provided: 1.5 Alcohol & Drug -Related, HIV/AIDS and 1.5 Alcohol & Drug -Specific, HIV/AIDS credits will be provided for participants who complete the entire training. SUBSTANCE ABUSE COUNSELING IN
THE AGE OF HIV DISEASE:
DYING AND DEATH
Course Description
This day and a half course is designed to increase participants knowledge and understanding of the process of death. Participants will explore their personal loss history and examine their perceptions of dying and death; consider some of the physiological, psychological, sociological, and spiritual issues of working with a recovering substance abuser dying from HIV disease; explore counseling techniques to be used in providing support to dying clients and their significant others during and after the clients death; explore ways in which to develop formal and informal systems that will support substance abuse counselors working with clients dying from complications related to AIDS; and increase their level of comfort in working with dying individuals and their significant others.
CEU Credit

SUBSTANCE ABUSE COUNSELING

FAMILIES IN CRISIS - DYSFUNCTIONAL FAMILY SYSTEMS
Course Description
This one-day course is designed to increase participant knowledge and understanding of family systems theory, family structure and process, and to help participants apply this knowledge to dysfunctional families with an HIV-infected member in chemical dependency treatment. Participants will define family systems, structure and process; identify areas of family process for assessment; describe communication patterns typical of families in stress; describe healthy communication patterns that counselors can model and assist dysfunctional families to adopt; describe major areas and respective issues for counseling chemically dependent families with an HIV-infected member; and through case study and group activities, learn strategies and techniques for engaging chemically dependent families in work toward support of their HIV-infected family member and themselves.

SUBSTANCE ABUSE COUNSELING

FOCUS ON WOMEN
Course Description
This one-day course was developed to provide substance abuse treatment counselors and allied professionals with an overview of those HIV/AIDS related issues and needs that particularly affect women, and to address ways in which substance abuse treatment staff and program structure can be responsive to womens concerns in order to affect risk reduction/health promotion for female clients and partners of clients. Particular emphasis is placed on the use of empowerment techniques to encourage self-directed risk assessment and sustained risk reduction. This workshop is designed for substance abuse treatment staff who are HIV/AIDS knowledgeable. Further training in dysfunctional families and risk assessment/risk reduction would be helpful.

GAY, LESBIAN AND BISEXUAL ISSUES
Course Description
This one-day course is designed to increase participant's knowledge and understanding of issues related to sexual minorities through self-assessment, group activities and lecture. Participants will learn the definitions of gay men, lesbian women and bisexuals; the basic elements of human sexuality; possible theories of sexual orientation development and distinguish between those that are myths and truths; unique counseling issues facing substance abusing gay men, lesbians and bisexuals; how HIV disease has affected gay male, lesbian and bisexual clients; how a counselors personal feelings and values about sexual orientation can affect counseling; how treatment programs can be more responsive to the needs of gay, lesbian and bisexual clients; and resources for improving counseling strategies.

STANCE ABUSE COUNSELING
IN THE AGE OF HIV DISEASE:
HIV RISK ASSESMENT AND RISK REDUCTION
Course Description
This one-day course is designed to enable counselors to integrate effective HIV disease prevention education into their work with chemically dependent individuals. Participants will learn basic principles underlying health education and how to adapt these principles to meet the needs of clients at risk for HIV infection. Participants will explore the difficulties facing both the counselor and the client in risk-reduction work and gain methods and skills for conducting risk-reduction/health promotion counseling. Participants will be introduced to an HIV risk-assessment/risk reduction tool to aid them in their HIV education and counseling with their clients.

HUMAN SEXUALITY
Course Description
This one and one-half day course is designed for substance abuse treatment staff wishing to increase their knowledge of human sexuality as it relates to substance abuse and HIV disease and to improve their skills in counseling clients on possible sensitive topics related to sexuality. Participants will learn key definitions used in sexuality and information about childhood and adolescent psychosexual development; explore the sources and effect of adult attitudes and values about sex; improve participants knowledge of sexual function and dysfunction; the effects of addiction on sexual functioning; increase their knowledge of sexually transmitted diseases and safer sex practices; improve skills in taking sexual histories and educating clients on sexual histories. In addition, participants will learn appropriate resources to obtain more information on sexual issues and/or make referrals for sex therapy or medical treatment.

RELAPSE PREVENTION
Course Description
This two-day course is designed for persons who work with recovering substance abuse clients. The course is an advanced HIV/AIDS training that covers the key definitions of abstinence, recovery and relapse including criteria that could be used to clarify each as they relate to treatment. The course will examine warning signs and personal concerns of clients and graduates, and how these can easily become factors in an individuals relapse and possible return to pretreatment substance abusing behaviors. Participants will learn counseling techniques and program strategies to support abstinent behavior and help newly recovering or sober individuals work through stressful crises. This course will provide participants with the components of an addict recovery self-help model program to prevent relapse and strategies to confront relapse-related problems arising as the impact of HIV disease increases in treatment programs.

Course Description
This two-day course is designed to provide participants with the information, effective exploration, and practice needed to enhance their ability to plan effective treatment for their substance-abusing clients. This course will enhance the counselors knowledge of the multidimensional nature of substance abuse and how to apply this knowledge to assessing the needs of clients. Participants will learn a four-phase model used to assess health concerns and psychosocial reactions to substance abuse and will learn how to incorporate these into treatment planning. Additionally, family and community support systems and resources will be explored. Through group case study work, participants will apply what they have learned in developing and implementing a comprehensive treatment plan.

HIV/AIDS UPDATE
Course Description
This half-day course is the 2006 update on HIV/AIDS information that includes a review of the latest research and developments regarding statistical trends, treatments and testing. Information relating to perinatal transmission of HIV, evolving high-risk groups and discussion of prevention efforts is also included. Information on the interaction of HIV drugs and recreational drugs is discussed, as the course looks substance abuse and HIV. Resources are provided on all the topics included in the workshop.

THE ETHICS OF HIV DISEASE
AND ADDICTIONS COUNSELING
Course Description
This half-day course will explore the issues that counselors and administrators in addiction treatment most often face in servicing the addicted client, who may also be HIV infected. Participants will also consider the issues and dilemmas that are presented as clients consider their risk status before testing takes place. Through the case study method, participants will apply different approaches and guidelines that help guide them through very difficult situations presented by clients. Participants should already have basic information about HIV disease.

TUBERCULOSIS: WHAT EVERY
COUNSELOR SHOULD KNOW
Course Description
This half-day course will include an overview of basic facts about tuberculosis (TB). The information will include brief history, connection to HIV/AIDS and pathogenesis. Also included will be a discussion of signs and symptoms, infection versus disease and infection control. Guidelines and resources for implementing TB policies into substance abuse facilities will be provided and reviewed.

STANDARD PRECAUTIONS
Course Description
This half-day workshop will focus on HIV updates that include information on the lifecycle of HIV and its impact on the immune system. There will also be an overview of the types of medications that are being used for treatments of persons who test positive for HIV and those who have been diagnosed with AIDS. New testing developments, update on HIV laws and latest statistics will also be reviewed. Information will be covered on standard precautions to include personal protection, agency policy and procedures, and resources for prevention equipment.

STD's IN THE LIFE OF SUBSTANCE USERS
Course Description
This one-day or half-day course is designed to help participants obtain a better understanding of the connection between substance abuse and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Information covered includes the nature of various STDs, common STDs symptoms, special issues for drug treatment centers and behaviors that can reduce the risk for contracting STDs. The six-hour version includes several interactive activities that assist participants in learning the information. The three-hour version is a didactic presentation.

PREVENTION AND MANAGEMENT
OF AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOR (VERBAL)
Course Description
This half-day course focuses on using communication skills to diffuse situations before they become physical. The Prevention and Management of Aggressive Behavior (PMAB) course was developed by Texas Department of Mental Health Mental Retardation to help reduce injuries to staff and clients. Due to its success in MHMR settings, the Texas HIV Connection now presents in three hours, the communication section to substance abuse professionals.

MOTIVATIONAL INTERVIEWING
Course Description
This two-day course is a counselor-guided, client-centered counseling style for helping clients express, experience, explore and resolve ambivalence about behavioral change. It was adapted from the curriculum presented in the book "Motivational Interviewing: Preparing People to Change Addictive Behavior" by William R. Miller & Stephen Rollnick. In addition to learning the basics of this exciting counseling methodology, trainees will also learn Prochaska, DiClemente and Norcross model of the stages of change model Participants will have many opportunities to practice their new counseling strategies during the training.

HEPATITIS 101
Course Description
This one-day course is designed to provide persons who work with substance abusers with a foundation of knowledge on all the different strains of viral hepatitis - Hepatitis A, B, C, D, E and G. The course covers the transmission, symptoms, treatment and vaccine availability of each virus, with a special emphasis on Hepatitis B and C. Descriptions of standard precautions are also provided for facilities addressing Hepatitis issues. HIV and Hepatitis co-infection and treatment options are briefly addressed, as are the implications of hepatitis infection to substance users. This course is primarily informational in content; it does not focus on skill building or theoretical issues related to counseling.
The course is divided into brief modules, each focusing on a different hepatitis. A number of short activities are included among these modules to help convey a large amount of information presented in a brief time span. There is also scheduled review time, so specific audience concerns can be addressed along with an overview review of course information.

Training Needs
Manuals and resources will be provided by the Texas HIV Connection. The number of participants is limited to 20 - 35. Sponsors must provide a training room large enough to comfortably accommodate the number of participants attending, with table and chairs, areas for small group work, a table for resources, a table for registration, and a table for the trainers. Sponsors may be asked to provide standard Audio/Visual equipment.

HEPATITIS C: BASIC KNOWLEDGE
Course Description
This half-day course is designed to provide basic knowledge on the Hepatitis C Virus (HCV). The course teaches participants the basic functions of a healthy liver and how HCV damages the liver, HCV transmission, testing for HCV, the HCV disease process, prevention, and treatment of HCV. The connection between HIV and Hepatitis C co-infection is addressed, as are the effects of substance abuse for a person with hepatitis infection. This course is primarily informational in content; it does not focus on skill building or theoretical issues related to counseling.
CEU Credit
3 Alcohol & Drug-Related, Hepatitis C credits are provided. However, no partial credit will be given for incomplete courses. Certificates of Completion will be awarded to participants at the end of the training. Continuing Education Units are provided for Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselors, Licensed Professional Counselors and Social Workers. Sponsors may apply for other types of credits.

HEPATITIS C: KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS FOR LCDC's
Course Description
This one-day course is designed to provide persons who work with substance abusers with a foundation of knowledge on the Hepatitis C Virus (HCV). The course teaches participants the basic functions of a healthy liver and how HCV damages the liver, HCV transmission, testing for HCV, the HCV disease process, prevention, and treatment of HCV. The connection between HIV and Hepatitis C co-infection is addressed, as are the effects of substance abuse for a person with hepatitis infection. This course focuses on skill building and theoretical issues related to counseling including promoting Hepatitis C messages using counseling skills and concepts, the use of transitional phrases to give complicated Hepatitis C information simply, integrating Hepatitis C messages into existing counseling programs, and prevention and test decision counseling. Participants will have opportunities to practice their new counseling strategies during the training.
CEU Credit
6 Alcohol & Drug-Related, Hepatitis C credits will be provided for participants who complete the entire training. However, no partial credit will be given for incomplete courses.
